This harks back to the unit 2 launch of 07 October 2008
How to make — or have — an argument
(Design Criticism)
The process of getting and applying new knowledge is sometimes slow and painstaking. What the first read of the changingminds.org materials can provide is a heightened sense of critical questioning, which is a useful response. Repeated application will result in more familiarity and comfort with argument construction and deconstruction (and facility in analyzing presidental debates).
Today we’ll review the readings with a close eye in terms of their construction, talk about what’s up for critique in design
criticism, and question/identify some of our own design-profession beliefs.
Project 2 launch
For Friday you should have started to identify a design reality you are longing to critically address. Bring in (typeset) a brainstormed list of ideas (at least four), supported by some real-life evidence (described, visually documented, or physically present). What approach will you take in stating your case? Give the latter some thought. Keep on the lookout for other examples of design criticism.
At semester's end, we're publishing our rants, er, criticism.
